Summary on Grant Application Form
Turbulence models, especially for unsteady flows, still remain the Achilles heal of CFD, Large Eddy Simulation (LES) presents a potentially better, but computationally expensive, alternative. Spalart of Boeing, at an invited lecture*, proposed a new more economical and hence feasible zonal LES approach. He tentatively demonstrated this to give improvements for one relatively high Reynolds number separated flow simulation. However, Spalart stated the accuracy of the novel, timely technique needs to be considered further, especially for flows without separation. This is proposed here. Unlike Spalart, a key motivation is to improve resolution of unsteady, relatively low Reynolds number, electronics and room ventilation related flows.*1999, 4th Int Symp on Engineering Turbulence Modelling and MeasurementEngProg\
