Summary on Grant Application Form
This study aims to develop a reliable method of damage detection in metallic structures. The proposed research programme involves interdisciplinary elements of physics, smart structures and advances signal processing. A Local Interaction Simulation Approach (LISA), used in physics, will be applied for propogation and crack modelling in metallic structures. This will involve a Virtual Parallel Machine (VPM) computation. The instantaneous frequency and phase of the resulting propagating waves will be analysed to extract features related to damage. The methodology will be validated using a simple fatigue experiment involving aluminium plates instrumented with piezoceramic sensors. The novelty of the proposed programme included (a) the combined LISA and VPM approach for modelling of interactions between ultrasonic waves and cracks in metallics; (b) analysis of the instantaneous frequency characteristics for crack monitoring.
