Due to their relatively low cost, VRLA batteries are likely to be favoured for many applications. However, hybrid vehicles in particular impose arduous demands since the batteries have low energy/power ratio, operate at around 50%SOC and are subject to high transient power charges/discharges, which compromises cycle life and performance.The project consists of the following stages:- Research to determine the degree of scatter in performance of nominally identical, advanced lead acid cells of a novel double-ended design. Identification of modifications to manufacturing and operational environments that could reduce this scatter.- Research into the reduction of spread of performance between cells across a complete battery pack, using thermal, load balancing and failed-cell isolation techniques.- Research into incorporation of fault tolerance and a safety system within the pack.- Complete battery pack mechanical and electrical systems design, including all vehicle interfaces, monitoring and control.-
