Due to their relatively low cost, VRLA batteries are likely to be favoured for many applications. However, hybrid vehicles in particular, impose particularly arduous demands, since the batteries have a low energy/power ratio, operate at around 50% SOC and are subjected to high transient charges/discharges, which compromises cycle life and performance. The project aims to significantly extend the life of the battery pack and improve their energy conversion efficiency. To this end research will be undertaken to reduce the performance scatter of nominally identical cells, to establish optimal cell charge equalisation and conditioning strategies, based around an accurate dynamic SOC model, and to realise a battery pack which incorporates appropriate thermal management, fault tolerance and safety features. The utility of the developed battery system will be demonstrated via bench testing under prescribed vehicle mission profiles and vehicle testing under real driving conditions
