Acoustic diffusers have applications in a wide variety of spaces where quality music and intelligible speech are important. For example, they may be used to disperse reflections that cause audible echoes and coloration in spaces such as churches, studios and concert halls. In the last few decades much has been learnt about the design and application of passive sound diffusers. This proposed project is about a radical step forward in diffuser design, the use and integration of active impedance elements to form active diffusers. Active surfaces have the potential to overcome limitations of passive devices, most pertinent to this application is the ability to operate over a wider bandwidth achieving better low frequency diffusion from a given depth. The project brings together experts in diffuser design, room acoustics, active impedance and control systems.
