It has recently been recognised that protective oxide layers may develop tensile cracks during thermal cycling. The present studies will examine this degradation mode on two chromia-forming austenitic steels, differing only in their silicon content and the ability to form a silica interlayer between chromia and steel during oxidation. The influence of this interlayer and temperature amplitude of the cycle on crack morphology and spacing will be examined using SEM and AFM techniques. The consequences of oxide cracking on solute depletion, subsurface oxidation and load-bearing capability of thin-sectioned specimens will be evaluated during subsequent creep testing.
