Summary on Grant Application Form
A feasibility study is outlined aimed at investigating two novel reaction pathways for depositing PTFE-like films based on metastable-monomer gas phase collisions. In the first case, polymerizable difluorocarbene species are generated via the interaction between pulses of metastable noble gas atoms and hexafluoropropyleneoxide molecules; whilst in the other, a modulated and synchronized beam of metastable atoms initiates the free radical polymerization of tetrafluoroethylene. The outlined high selectivity Penning Polymerization mechanism has not previously been explored for polymer film deposition.
