|
Software tools are increasingly used for timing measurements in studies of human performance, but a range of evidence indicates that the reliability of timing using such tools can fail to meet the requirements of researchers and is subject to a range of influences which may be hard for the researcher to control. The project aims to establish a sound basis for testing the timing characteristics of software tools used by behavioural scientists in chronometric studies, and to set up a standards laboratory for validating timing measurements. This will involve the development of appropriate testing criteria, benchmark standards and testing methodologies, the collection of timing data from commonly-used tools, the dissemination of information on good practice and the establishment of a continuing testing service. The standards laboratory will become self-funding through charged services for the assessment of the reliability of research scripts and software, for benchmarking commercial products and by providing benchmarking software and good practice guides. The outcomes of the project, through both the raised awareness and the continuing service, will be of benefit to all researchers, practioners and educators who use software tools for timing measurements of human performance.
