Summary on Grant Application Form
Carbon-containing castable high-temperature composite refractories are the goal of all carbon-based refractories producers and much effort is being made worldwide towards their development. However, their commercialisation is hindered by technical difficulties including graphites poor water wettability and the hydration tendancy of A1 metal-based antioxidants. This project will investigate the use of sol-gel coatings to improve water wettability of graphite and organic/inorganic coatings to improve A1 powders hydration resistance. Additionally, other antioxidants, such as A14SiC4 and A18B4C7, which have better antioxidising properties than A1 but no hydration tendancy, will also be considered. The eventual aim is to fabricate MgO-C and alumina-C based castables with high graphite content (>10wt%) and establish factors controlling their processing, microstrctures and properties. Successful development of these new castables will markedly improve BOS/EAF and ladle lining lives.
