There is a need for better technology and methods to support the investigation of large distributed systems and their user communities. Present studies depend on small samples and ad-hoc instrumentation , leading to poor evidence regarding the operation and impact of systems.GRUMPS will develop generic integrated technology to support a wide variety of longitudinal studies in any application domain, comprising:. interactive tools for adding instrumentation to applications. instruments to collect data about user and system actions. harnesses for deploying instrumented applications. an operations control system to monitor and control experiments. a repository organisation for usage data . instrumentation interworking protocols. tools for extracting derived information from these repositories
