Summary on Grant Application Form
This project aims to lay a theoretical basis for a practical collection of evaluation techniques that can help designers improve the usability of digital library systems. This theoretical basis will be arrived at by testing, scoping and adapting existing usability evaluation techniques so that they become appropriate for the design of digital libraries.Like any interactive system, a digital library will have certain features that determine its usability. We aim to study the use of a digital library in situ in order to discover what those features are. Given this collection of usability issues we will then analyse existing evaluation techniques that we believe best address those issues. This pairing of usability issues with evaluation techniques that can detect and 'measure' them will form the theoretical underpinning of a suite of usability techniques that designers can use to improve their design decisions with respect to usability. We will work closely with the team that develops the BT laboratories digital library and study the usage of that library. We will also test the wider validity of our findings with other digital libaries.
