Beta-lactam antibiotics are one of society's most important defences against bacterial infections. 'Cleaner', more environmentally friendly synthetic routes to these compounds are needed and new types are essential because of increasing resistance by microorganisms. This research aims to develop new, cleaner synthetic methods based on oxime ester precursors. These compounds have the potential for photochemical; and/opr thermal preparations, possibly in aqueous media , of existing and new types of beta-lactams. In addition, analogus oxime esters will be used in the preparation of structurally related biologically acyive compounds including gamma-lactams. An explanatory study of homolytic chemistry of hydrazones containing unsaturated side chains will also be undertaken.
