Summary on Grant Application Form
Thin polymer films confined by solid capping layers exhibit striking self-assembled morphologies that occur as a result of instabilities driven by long-ranged dispersion forces acting across the films. We propose to study these morphologies with two aims; to understand the basic physics behind the instability and thus open the way to use these measurements as a probe of dispersion forces in thin films of complex geometries, and to develop ways of controlling the perfection of order in the morphologies.
