The Visiting Fellow will develop theoretical models of the fluid and solid mechanics associated with a laser generated cavitation bubble near a flexible compliant boundary. Because of the bubble shape is unknown, the flow field will be represented by a distribution of singularities over the bubble surface using a boundary integral method. This method will be extended to allow for the development of toroidal bubbles and for bubble 'splitting', leading to a complex nest of toroidal bubbles. The elastic boundary will initially be modelled by linear membrane and elastic plate boundaries. Later research will need to allow for the non-liner elastic behaviour of the 'solid' boundary. The physical understanding derived from the theoretical model will help with understanding earlier experimental studies at Lubeck in Germany.
