Our proposed programme has two main themes: (i) the development of short wavelength lasers operating in and beyond the water-window (300-500 eV photon energies) and (ii) the application of existing, saturated soft X-ray lasers (50-200 eV photon energies) to non-linear 4-wave mixing processes.We plan to investigate two approaches to shortening the wavelength of X-ray lasers (XRLs). Saturated XRLs at wavelengths ~3-4 nm are feasible with ~100 psec optical pumping lasers of the upgraded VULCAN specification. Lasing at wavelengths as short as ~2nm should occur as new transitions associated with an inner hole in Ni-like ions, pumped with ~1 psec optical lasers and requiring travelling wave excitation.XRLs are eminently suitable for investigations of non-linear optical processes. Emission on saturated lines is extremely bright (eg ~10**24 photons/s/mm**2/mrad**2) over narrow bandwidths (~ 0.003%) with instantaneous flux being several orders of magnitude brighter than from synchrotrons. We plan to demonstrate mixing of optical and soft X-ray lasers in 4-wave processes leading to near second harmonic generation and potentially weak tunability of the X-ray beam.All aspects of the experimental programme will be supported by detailed computational modelling dealing with the hydrodynamics and atomic physics of these phenomena.
