Two phases polycrystalline materials are of considerable interest for structural engineering applications, including conventional alloys and metal matrix composites. We will carry out thermo-mechanical loading of a metal-ceramic composite in-situ on the ENGIN station of the PEARL beamline at ISIS. Whilst studies have been carried out in the past for thermal or mechanical loading of composites, it is the situation where both vary which is of great relevance to real systems.The primary quanitification of composite effectiveness is the level of load transfer between the two phases. Neutron diffraction measurements at a pulsed neutron source allow the simultaneous and individual monitoring of the strain development in each phase of the composite material, and thus calculation of the effectiveness of the composite.The measurements will provide understanding of TMF fatigue mechanisms in composite materials which experience highly tri-axial stress states.
