Bose - Einstein condensation in a dilute gas is a unique system for studying phenomena such as super fluidity because the weak interactions mean that many of its properties are calculable from first principles - in strong contrast to the situation in super fluid helium. Indeed the ground state properties of Bose - condensed gases are already well described by theory and current work is focused on their topological excitations and dynamics. We have recently measured the scissors mode of oscillation for a condensate which provides evidence for super fluidity. We will extend this work by carrying out experiments on vortices in out rotating anisotropic trap and making comparison with the numerous theoretical preditions. We will also use a combination of magnetic trapping and dipole forces to form toroidal trap (by focusing a blue - detuned laser beam through the centre of the condensate.) This manipulation of the trapped condensate by light forces is a very flexible tool that can be used to create various geometries such as a ring with a weak link or two separated condensates.
