From 2003, the front ends of motor vehicles sold in Europe will need to satisfy tough new European legislation regarding pedestrian safety. The legislation cannot be satisfied by existing technology because the front ends will be required to operate under two different types of impact. A new class of impact absorbing materials being developed at the University of Manchester will considerably reduce the associated conflict of stiffness problems. The material, shock absorbing liquid, SALi, exhibits bulk compression characteristics and acts like an elastic liquid during an impact, unlike elastomeric foams, which exhibit uniaxial compression characteristics. A bumper padded with SALi can act like a soft foam for lower leg impacts, but like a stiff foam for bumper-to-bumper impacts. Other stiffness conflicts relating to adult/child headform and upper leg impacts could also be resolved using SALi. The project will enable a deeper understanding of SALi, and the creation of design guidelines. In collaboration with the University, a full size, pedestrian friendly, vehicle front end, using SALi, will be designed and fabricated by Dow Automotive, Dow Chemicals Limited by 2003.
