Summary on Grant Application Form
This project will develop a new technique for calculating sound emitted by free shear flows. The calculations will be based on an acoustic analogy such as Lilley's equation that takes into account the interaction of the sound with the mean flow. However, instead of using the usual Green's function approach, the equation will be solved by a time-marching technique. This will easily account for the retarded-time variation. Acoustic properties such as the acoustic intensity and the directivity will be computed during the simulation. These will be compared with those obtained from approximate analytical solutions. The clear cut between the propagation terms and the source terms offered by the acoustic analogy, will help in developing appropriate boundary conditions. The scheme will be used to compute the sound emitted by planar jets. The planar jets will be simulated using an existing compressible direct numerical simulation code.
