Summary on Grant Application Form
The main premise of this proposal is that the addition of a Parallel Electron Energy Loss Spectrometer with Image Filtering (PEELS/IF) capability to an existing microscope will greatly strengthen the analytical capability of the instrument. To this end monies for this equipment and a RA to support the instrument are requested. A large number of established programmes, most of them of international significance, will be enhanced by the additional capability offered. The programmes, which will benefit in this way, embrace a wide range of areas, which come broadly under the area of materials. These include structural engineering materials, electronic and other functional materials and issues of materials degradation. It is anticipated that the application of PEELS/IF will also further strengthen interdisciplinary collaboration. The management of this proposal is designed with this objective in mind. The RA included as part of the proposal will be a focus of hands-on expertise, facilitating researchers to get the full potential from the equipment. At the end of each year a one-day meeting will be hosted at the University of Surrey. Industrial partners will be invited to this meeting, strengthening future partnerships with industry.
