Summary on Grant Application Form
Organisations are increasingly using the Internet for their day to day functioning by incorporating computer support for their business processes. These business processes include interactions between customer-to-business as well as between business-to-business. This naturally leads to business processes that cross organisational boundaries. An inter-organisational business relationship is commonly referred to as a virtual enterprise (VE). The project will develop an architecture for VE that will enable organisations to share information and co-ordinate business processes within a VE in a rapid, dynamic and flexible manner. The project is novel in that it is simultaneously addressing the requirements that range from interoperability to dependability to privacy to change management to auditability. The project will use COBRA middleware and transactional workflow co-ordination technology for representing and managing business processes in a dependable manner. It will develop the concept of VE workspace as a way of arranging inter-organisational workflows that does not compromise an organisation's privacy and autonomy.
