Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposed research involves a theoretical and experimental approach to an entirely novel concept for dissipating energy (damping) in vibrating structures, based upon non-contacting magnetostrictive particulate coatings. In this concept, a conformal magnetic generating coating comprising a host matrix with magnetostrictive particles is applied to the vibrating structure. A second, separate (non-contact) coating comprising a viscoelastic matrix and magnetostrictive particle, (of a smaller radius than the generating coating) absorbs the radiated magnetic field energy via the actuation of the smaller particles in the viscoelastic damping matrix. The research will develop models of this concept in order to optimise the energy dissipation and identify the key parameters. The performance of the concept will be validated experimentally. Close collaboration with the Department of Chemistry will ensure that the appropriate materials/coatings will be available together with advice on their characterisation. The research provides for training in a multidisciplinary field involving Chemists and Electrical Engineers who will respectively be involved in material development and magnetic field theory.EngProg\
