Summary on Grant Application Form
Interpolation to scattered data on the sphere is a commonly occurring problem, and fairly recent research has established that radial basis functions are a suitable tool for this purpose. To carry out the construction of the interpolant, two computational ingredients are needed - a fast preconditioner/solver for the associated liner system and a fast method for evaluating radial basis functions. The project will develop efficient evaluation methods.
