Summary on Grant Application Form
SUMMARY:Errors occur in the conventional two-pan heat flux DSC when latent heat is evolved. To reduce the errors, small 1mg samples are traditionally used. It has been shown that the errors can be eliminated in a novel single pan calorimeter even for large samples. It is proposed to improve the new single pan calorimeter and to increase its operating temperature to 1600c. Industry important ferrous and Ni based alloys will be investigated with Rolls Royce and Corus. In addition the two pan calorimeter will be numerically modelled so that true enthalpy versus temperature can be extracted from the results obtained on a traditional two-pan DSC.
