|
The importance of various branches of formal logic and philosophy, which broadly constitute argumentation theory, has only very recently been recognised in artificial intelligence. Increasingly, however, Ai is turning to research in argumentation for techniques applicable to a wide range of domains, including legal reasoning systems, knowledge-level communication between autonomous agents, and the man-machine interface. Preliminary results have demonstrated that argumentation theoretic notions have the potential not only to increase the flexibility and expressive power of such systems, but also to introduce computational savings. Furthermore, the use of computational models is also of increasing interest to argumentation theoreticians, who see such implementations as a means of testing and exploring novel theories. The symposium is intended to address the problem that at present there is no forum for researchers from argumentation theory and artificial intelligence to come together and exchange ideas. It is particularly appropriate time to host such a meeting and to stimulate collaboration, since the two fields are in the process of recognising the utility of collaboration, but very few cross disciplinary links have yet been formed.
