Summary on Grant Application Form
We recently found that it was possible to dope plasma deposited DLC films with phosphorus, giving films with C:P ratios of almost 1:1. We would now like to extend this work, to see if it is possible to take these hydrogenated amorphous C:P films, remove the hydrogen, and crystalline them to form a stable film of crystalline carbon phosphide. Such a material would be new to science, and by comparison with other phosphides from elements in Groups adjacent to C (e.g. GaP, AlP, BP) it is expected that carbon phosphide may have similar properties, such as extreme hardness, tuneable band gap and semiconductor behaviour. These would make it potentially useful in mechanical applications or opto-electronics.We wish to perform a systematic series of experiments to attempt to deposit such carbon phosphide films, remove any residual hydrogen (by making or sputtering), and then crystallise the film in a high temperature sinter process. The composition, morphology, structure and crystallinity of these films will be determind by a variety of surface science techniques, such as Auger, SIMS, XRD and TEM. In parallel to this, computer modelling of the crystal structures of likely CPx arrangements will be performed to predict electronic and mechanical properties.
