The focus of this programme of research is the design of new materials for optically addressable integrated liquid crystal optoelectronic systems and the understanding of the structure-physical property relationships of these materials.The approach is based on the concept that orientation and surface anchoring of liquid crystal matrices can be controlled and modulated by a combination of interactive and static alignment components attached to surfaces of solid substrates. These reversible but stable structural changes in shape and electronic structure in the interactive alignment material are on the molecular level, they can be addressed optically and LC matrix is realigned by these changes in the structure of the surface alignment system.The use of novel surface chemistry methods is intended to allow for the employment of a wide range of solid substrates, of which silicon substrates are of particular interest.The study and investigation of the photochromic properties, the self-assembling behaviour of these envisaged novel systems in liquid crystal matrices and bonded to the surfaces of solid substrates will allow for highly integrated optoelectronic systems.The research project involves the application of current expertise in thin film materials and technology developed in liquid-crystal research to interactive surface alignment systems.
