Chiral phosphine ligands are of key importance in asymmetric synthesis of optically active products by homogeneous catalysis using organometallic species. Although many chiral phosphines and bis-phosphines have been reported, there remains a need for novel and easily accessible ligands with the potential for structural fine-tuning, which may improve results in processes that at present give only modest selectivities. The proposed research is aimed to develop a new route to chiral cyclic phosphines using the ring closing metathesis (RCM) of phosphino-borane dienes, trienes or tetraenes as the key step. The first part of the project will combine the RCM with the chemistry of Juge (synthesis of phosphines from chiral oxazaphospholidine complex) to prepare a wide range of new cyclic chiral phosphines. In the second part, new designed phosphines including chelating ether function will be prepared using asymmetric RCM processes. Several strategies will be studied including (1) the use of a chiral boron species as the chiral auxiliary, (2) the kinetic resolution of racemic triene or (3) the asymmetric desymmetrisation of tetraenes. The last two strategies will involve the use of chiral catalysts. The last part of the project will be focused on the evaluation of these new chiral phosphine ligands.
