Summary on Grant Application Form
This work will involve a number of experiments to determine the unwanted background component present in 3D backprojected PET images when imaging with non-pure positron emitters such as Iodine 124. A small volume PET scanner will be used to image point sources of radioactivity for various situations (different locations in different objects, and different radioactivity levels). These experiments will reveal the general functional form of the unwanted background component (which is due to scatter and random events). This general functional form of the background component from a point source will be used in a computer algorithm which will adapt the parameters of the function in order to predict the entire background component for each unique imaging situation. The developed algorithm will then allow the unwanted background component to be subtracted from a 3D backprojected PET image. In addition to this correction, a method for correcting backprojected images for the attenuation of photons will be developed. The developed correction methods will greatly aid accurate imaging of compounds labelled with non-pure positron emitters, and will be validated for various imaging situations.
