A brushless doubly-fed reluctant machine has 2 three-phase stator windings ,of different pole number, and a cageless reluctance rotor. It is a prospective candidate for applications requiring speed control in limited range, since a fractionally rated power electronic converter can be used. The aim of the project is to devise a sensorless direct torque control algorithm for this machine and to experimentally investigate its performance. A BDFRM machine will be designed and manufactured using 2 standard induction motors as the starting point. The direct torque control algorithm will be based on hysteresis control of secondary flux and torque and an optimum switching table will be formed. The algorithm will be investigated by simulation. At the next stage, a model-based speed estimation method is to be developed and its properties examined by simulation. These studies will utilise parameters of a BDFRM available in literature. As the implementation of the developed control scheme will require knowledge of the machine electrical parameters, procedures for their off-line and/or on-line identification will be developed. Finally, the complete sensorless direct torque control algorithm will be implemented in DSP hardware, the laboratory test-rig will be built, and the performance of the drive will be evaluated experimentally.
