Summary on Grant Application Form
1. Tunnel linings and the ground adjacent to tunnels will be instrumented to measure the impact of pile construction. During the 3 year life of the project, the effect of pile loading will additionally be monitored. Tunnel lining deformations and ground displacements between tunnel and pile will be recorded.2. The Imperial College Finite Element Program (ICFEP) will be used to perform fully coupled three dimensional analyses of the construction and loading of bored piles in close proximity to existing tunnels. To produce reliable results the correct stress regime will be produced in the ground (through the modelling of tunnel construction and a period of consolidation), and representative non-linear soil models and boundary conditions will be employed. The field cases in 1. above will be analysed in order to give confidence in an extensive parametric study. The necessary development work will be the linking of ICFEP to a commercial pre- and post-processing package to allow generation of full three dimensional finite element meshes, and graphic presentation of the results.EngProg\
