The proposed research consists of both experimental and computational study. The experimental study is to be conducted in two distinct components. The first component is to be undertaken at Bath, where the objective is to conduct a series of fundamental experiments using simple models of turbine blade tip gaps. In particular, variety of generic film cooling and blade tip geometries will be investigated over the subsonic and transonic flow regimes. Thermochromic liquid crystals are to be used to measure the heat transfer coefficient and cooling effectiveness. The aerodynamic characteristics are to be evaluated by measuring the pressure distribution and discharge coefficients of the clearance gaps, and from schlieren photography. The second component will be undertaken at Cambridge. Heat transfer experiments will be conducted in a low-speed cascade previously used for tip-clearance aerodynamic studies. The test section of the cascade will be modified to accommodate the addition of film cooling and thermochromic liquid crystals. The computational study is also divided into two components. The first component is to be undertaken at Cambridge where the tip-leakage flows will be modelled using the NEWT code.
