This project will investigate the application of a simple but elegant potentiometric concept to the design of various toxic gas sensors. The sensors to be developed are based on the use of silver salts with high ionic conductivity at ambient temperatures, thus allowing low energy operation. A solid state design with an integral, reversible reference electrode will allow low cost sensor fabrication and the possibility of long life operation. Fundamental experimental and theoretical studies will be made of sensor operation. The effect of composition, materials and structure of the electrochemical cell on operating performance will be investigated using a range of analytical techniques. From these studies different sensor designs will be evaluated, and for those with the best operating performance the fabrication technology will be transferred to the industrial partners for the production engineering, manufacture and marketing.Overall the project will be a mix of basic and applied research geared to the requirements of specific markets: heat, ventilation and air conditioning, industrial safety instrumentation and portable gas analysers. The programme will provide an increased competitive edge to two UK partners.
