In many areas of activity the intelligent operation of machines and processes is being held back by a lack of appropriate sensors. It would be a clear benefit to be able to monitor the condition of these machines and to be able to detect reasons for failure and advise repair staff of the exact problem, or to predict maintenance requirements based upon machine condition. A particularly demanding application is that of mail prcoessing. Bearing failures are the greatest problem and the most promising technique for monitoring has been shown to be that of infra red (IR) thermography.The costs of equipment are well in excess of 30,000 which means they are rarely used and never as a built in process sensor system. Low cost IR systems are often confined to single element passive devices, with insufficient resolution to discriminate events of interest from background noise, etc. Array Based Devices (ABD) with a few hundred elements which may be integrated into the manufacturing environment for process control and machine condition onitoring are a way forward. This programme will produce a sensing system, which will provide adequate performance (resolving circa 1 degree contigrade) for the process production control industries at a cost below 1000
