Summary on Grant Application Form
Mirror symmetry suggests that certain string theories compactified on two quite distinct six-dimensional manifolds, known as Calabi-Yau manifolds, are in fact identical. This led to a number of enumerative predictions of a seemingly miraculous nature, many of which have since been verified. However, until recently, there was no understanding of a geometric connection between mirror pairs of Calabi-Yau manifolds. In 1996, A.Strominger, S-T. Yau and E.Zaslow proposed a geometric link between mirror pairs. There is growing evidence for their conjecture, and this proposal is geared to understanding the relationship between their conjecture and the enumerative predictions of mirror symmetry.
