Recently developed photochemical techniques will be used in conjunction with methods established in York to study organometallic photochemistry. Step-scan time-resolved infrared spectroscopy will allow measurement of the time evolution of IR spectra (especially CO-stretching brands) with high sensitivity from ca. 50 ns to ca. 1 ms. Low-temperature NMR spectroscopy with photolysis within the probehead allows rapid collection of NMR data on photoproducts which are too labile for study by conventional methods. In each part of the programme below, the methods will enable us to monitor the spectra and reactions of very short-lived intermediates (microseconds), species of longer lifetime (second) and the final products. The targets are:1. Ion-pair photochemistry to generate radicals containing hydride groups and radicals with a 15-electron configuration.2. The reactions of photo-generated organic fragments, such as diarycarbenes with transition-metal organometallics. This series of experiments reverses the normal strategy. The light absorbing species will be an organic molecule with sensitivity to visible light which acts as a source of an organic photofragment such as a carbene.3. The photochemical synthesis and reactivity of complexes formed by vinyl ketones and vinyl esters.
