The programme will investigate the feasibility of fabricating a new range of piezoelectric ultrasonic transducers and arrays using laser micro-machining techniques. A customised laser system will be employed to fabricate micro-miniature bimorph and unimorph arrays, to promote extremely efficient operation over the frequency range 20kHz - 5MHz into both gaseous and liquid load media. The feasibility of positioning a second (much higher frequency) transducer on the moving surface of a bimorph/unimorph will also be investigated, with a view towards providing cost effective scanning for intravascular and other medical imaging applications. Transducer designs will be evaluated using finite element modelling, with subsequent fabrication and characterisation taking place within the laboratories at Strathclyde. If successful, the proposed research will have important implications for ultrasonic sensor design in non-destructive testing, and remote positioning systems, in addition to underwater and biomedical imaging applications.
