Summary on Grant Application Form
Our previous studies have shown changes in material properties of subchondral bone from patients with osteoporosis or osteoarthritis. Changes in mechanical properties have been inferred from these but not proven due to the difficulties of testing cancerous bone material independently of its structure. This project will combine microindentation testing, to measure hardness and stiffness, with electron probe microanalysis, to measure mineral content and porosity and thereby show whether the expected changes in mechanical properties exist and, if so, how these might be related to changes in material properties.EngProg\
