Developments in the evaluation of crack tip stress fields using thermoelasticity have been centred on opening mode cracks and predominantly mode I mixed-mode slots. It is proposed to perform experiments to determine the stress intensity factors of biaxial fatigue cracks using a recently developed algorithm which uses thermoelastic data. Numerical solutions for predominantly mode II cracks, which have not been experimentally verified, will be assessed using the new thermoelastic method.Until recently it has only been possible to use thermoelasticity to investigate the crack tip parameters of stationary cracks, due to the limitations of thermoelastic instruments such as SPATE. A new instrument, Deltatherm, which enables thermoelastic data to be recorded in real time, will be used with the developed methodology to perform a pilot study on the analysis of propagating mixed-mode fatigue cracks in laboratory specimens and aero-engine components. This could potentially lead to a major advancement in non-destructive stress analysis tools.The outcome of the proposed research will be a non-contacting experimental method for the assessment of fatigue cracks, with potential applications in the aerospace and automotive industries.
