Summary on Grant Application Form
The programme of work will be split between the Open University and the University of Edinburgh. The Open University will be responsible for setting up an MLSSA system to generate maximum length sequences (pseudo-random sequences of pulses) which will be used as the acoustic pulse reflectometry input signal. The maximum length sequences will have greater high frequency content than a single pulse. The Open University will also be responsible for developing a new method of measuring internal duct dimensions based on measuring the complex input impedance of the duct. The University of Edinburgh will be responsible for developments in pulse shaping and signal processing, including the use of bursts of noise to improve the high frequency content of the probing signal. The University of Edinburgh will also be responsible for extending the reconstruction algorithms to include higher order modes of propagation, and in carrying out experimental tests to validate the multimodal approach.Reconstructions made using these different methods will be compared and the improvements assessed.
