Worsening road traffic congestion and associated environmental problems means UK industry is searching for alternative, more sustainable transport modes. Seaways potentially offer a radical alternative to trunk road transport, more especially when combined with developing fast ferry technology. Recent fast ferry developments on coastal routes in other countries with long coastlines (e.g. Japan, Italy) suggest the UK may be missing a major opportunity to develop a similar kind of marine motorway system. This project will therefore examine the potential commercial and operational feasibility of a fast ferry system for freight on selected UK coastal routes, to provide a new and improved integrated transport system, thereby benefiting industry and society. Science base partners undertaking the study have recent experience of similar research overseas, combined with substantial knowledge of the UK logistics industry. Industry partners include key decision makers in the transport chain, such as ports, ferry operator, shipbuilding and design, and integrated transport providers. The research effort is enhanced through inclusion of expert consultants in areas of fast ship operation and safety, manning and regulation.
