Summary on Grant Application Form
The principal aim of the project is the preparation of polymers P (poly(spiro[cyclopropane-1,2 - (1, 3 - dialkyl)benzimidazolindenes]), and the exploration of their properties. These polymers are expected to (a) show strongly-controlled secondary structure, and (b) be readily oxidised to materials which should show high conductivity through a hole-hopping mechanism. The polymers will be prepared by two routes (I) post-polymerisation modification of the ethylene/CO copolymer through trans-aminalisation with suitable 2,2-dialkylbenzimidazolidenes, and (ii) by cationic ring-opening polymerisation of spiro [cyclopropane-1,2-(1, 3-dialkyl) benzimidazolidenes}. New methods for the preparation of spiro {cyclopropane-1,2-(1, 3-dialkyl)benzimidazolidenes will be developed.
