Ensembles of interacting vortices give rise to new states of matter, the study of which constitutes the mature yet vibrant field of vortex matter physics. The major component in the rapid development of this field over recent years has been the rich variety of vortex matter phases observed in the exotic anisotropic superconductors. Although this research has direct relevance to the understanding and application of systems such as the high-Tc materials, the fundamental nature of the work contains much wider implications for other areas such eg the study of order in the presence of random perturbations, or the physics of neutron stars.We wish to continue and expand our highly successful world leading studies of the vortex state in exotic superconductors, which use a unique combination of muon, neutron and macroscopic techniques to attain a deep understanding of the physics of these systems at a microscopic level. Our studies will also be extended to examine artificially -fabricated low-dimensional structures which will provide unique model systems. We will supplement our previous techniques with the use of polarised neutron reflectometry, which we have recently demonstrated to be highly suitable for the study of superconducting multilayers. community, both in the UK and abroad
