Summary on Grant Application Form
Osseointegrated trans-femoral implants for direct skeletal attachment were introduced by Professor Branemark in Sweden. A clinical trial was started in the UK in 1997. The bone-implant interfacial stress level has been identified as significant to the long term survival of the implant. This is because the complexity of the mechanical, physiological and biological integration of different materials. The prediction of the stress and strain distribution therefore becomes essential to optimise the design of the osseointegrated implant. A 2D FE method has already been used by the BME Group in the University of Surrey. This project will extend this method to 3D FE modelling to include a realistic geometrical contact and osseointegration between the implant and cortical bone. The 3D FE model is based on the femoral profile of amputees obtained from CT scans. It will take account of clinical considerations including the degree of osseointegration and circumferential coverage. Complex load cases representing the applied forces and moments during an amputee walking cycle will be used for the FE analysisl The derived model will be used as the basis for optimisation design work and as a bench mark for longer term monitoring of implant function.
