Summary on Grant Application Form
The purpose of the course is to provide high quality, in-depth training in optics and photonics to both full-time and part-time students. The training is aimed at providing the understanding, knowledge and skills for potential careers in the established optics-related industry and in the emerging biomedical, environmental and communications areas. The following ,modules will be offered: Foundation, Specialist, Self-Study, Laboratory and Project. During the period of EPSRC funding we shall train ~ 30 full-time students per year and develop internet-based training, based on our extensive knowledge base in optical physics and past experience in MSc and short courses in Optics, aimed specifically at those already employed in industry wishing to study for an in-depth MSc degree in optics and photonics to take refresher modules. The internet based training is expected to inc the live transmission of lectures, laboratory demonstrations, and the development of self-study and problem-solving material. The overall goal during the 5 year period is to extend our current MSc course to include new subject areas, particularly in opto-electronics, and new modalities of learning, particularly distance learning using the internet.
