High temperature superconductors (HTS) are now finding their way into applications, both as conductors at DC and power line frequencies, and as thin film microwave components. However, major improvements are still needed for these applications to be commercially viable.As a consequence of their growth and processing, the materials have non-uniform properties, caused by grain boundaries, off-stoichiometry, etc and their performance is severely degraded.In order to further understanding of these problems, we propose to image the local critical current density on a scale -10 microns, using a novel fast scanning Hall probe. While imaging of this kind has been done previously in low fields by this and other techniques, we will be able to image at technologically-relevant fields of up to several Tesla. This information will be fed back to our growth and processing programme, and thereby assist enhancement of the performance of the materials under realistic conditions.The same approach will allow also: improved understanding of AC losses in HTS conductors: exploration of some fundamental aspects of vortex phenomenology of superconductors: characterisation of Colossal MagnetoResistance oxides: characterisation of materials for the newly-developing area of spintronics and novel structures fabricated from them.
