Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposal aims at evaluating the properties of some new upconverting phosphors to pinpoint key mechanisms that control the light emission and the factors that influence them. Using methodology pioneered at Greenwich, a range of new upconverting emission phosphors will be prepared and ideally their morphology and size will be engineered so that large spherical particles are produced under reproducible controlled conditions. The effect of fluxes on the morphology and particle size will be investigated, as will the preparation by sol-gel methodology of growing crystallites of the phosphors in glass matrices. Samples will be prepared for industrial evaluation.
