Efficient energy transfer is now perceived as one of the major limiting factors in improving device efficiency in polymer light emitting devices for display applications. This application seeks to develop new block and side chain copolymers carrying a high energy gap electroluminescent component and an efficient phosphor (organic and inorganic materials). Controlled living and solid state polymerisation techniques will be developed to engineer appropriate length scales, energy barriers, and solvent processibility to provide a new family of materials designed to harness the charge injection energy associated with both singlet and triplet excited states. The improvement in design will result from an integrated synthesis/device physics programme in which the feedback from fundamental studies on the solid state physics and optoelectronic properties of the polymers will be used to improve the design criteria.
