Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposed work addresses a major social, medical and economic problem via development of optimum performance biomaterials for urological applications. Our primary objective is to produce Materials or coating that I) inhibit urease, or ii) inhibit the swarming migration of P. mirabilis or iii) ablate at a controlled rate at pH 8.0. We will also investigate the performance of biomaterials that incorporate combinations of these properties. There is established knowledge concerning all these objectives which we shall use to select a range of materials for detailed evaluation in a series of fully validated tests already developed by one of us (DS). Also the established knowledge will be used to design, make, characterise and test novel polymeric materials. The newly established data base of knowledge concerning the performance of known and new materials in relation to objectives i) to iii) will be used to redesign, make, characterise and test further materials in an iterative manner leading to optimisation of both material and performance.
