Summary on Grant Application Form
The aim of the proposed programme is to perform experimental quantitative structural determinations on clean and molecular absorbate covered single crystal metal oxide surfaces of current interest. The measurements will be carried out using LEED-IV, employing a low current incident electron beam, so as to avoid surface degradation. Structure determination will involve comparison of experimental data with theoretically simulated data. Initially, the experimental programme will focus on two clean surfaces of Ti02(110), the stoichiometric (1x1) reduced (1x2), and (2x1) overlayers of carboxylates(formate, acetate and benzoate) on Ti02(110)1x1. Further studies will then be performed on various phases of the Sn02(110) surface, the reduced (1x1), (1x2), and (2x1) surfaces, also oxidised Sn02(110)1x1, and finally Sn02(110)1x1 following thermal desorption of formic acid. Motivation for studying these systems is provided both by current interest in the surface science community, in particular in Ti02(110), and the technological significance of these two oxides.
